So many Passes which ones do you take in.

This country seems to have the most hairpins.

Furka, Susten, Gotthard, Grimsel, San Bernardino to name just five.

Andermatt is a good location for ticking them off, as is Davos. So these are the two towns chosen to base a day's driving around.

Top Passes

I must just mention one pass here that is really rather special.

The Furka Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.431 m (7,976ft) above the sea level, located in one of the snowiest regions in Switzerland. It’s one of the world's most iconic, exhilarating and exciting drives, through the Swiss Alps. The pass was imortalised by the Aston DB5 / Ford Mustang car chase in James Bond's Goldfinger. It's one of the highest mountain passes of the Alps.

Gotthard

We need to make sure we take the Old Gotthard Pass. Cobbled road surface still, very twisty. Its known as Val Tremola. Road is really awesome. First built in 1830's. The newer is much smarter and paved beautifully. Up to 1980 all traffic went over this route. So now much quieter. Videos from 1960's show a slow snail train of cars at peak season trying to drive it and overheating most of the time starting at Airolo. The Gotthard Pass or St Gotthard Pass (Italian: Passo del San Gottardo, German: Gotthardpass at 2,106 m (6,909 ft)) is a mountain pass in the Alps, connecting northern and southern Switzerland. The pass lies between Airolo in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, and Andermatt in the German-speaking canton of Uri, and connects further Bellinzona to Lucerne, Basel, and Zurich. The region of the Gotthard Pass is an important north-south axis in Europe and is crossed by three major traffic tunnels, each being the world's longest at the time of their construction: the Gotthard Rail Tunnel (1882), the Gotthard Road Tunnel (1980) and the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016).

Grimsel

Grimsel Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.164 m (7,100 ft) above the sea level. The road is normally closed between October and May, due to the high snowfall on the pass. It's one of the highest mountain passes of the Alps.

Susten

Susten Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.264 m (7,428 ft) above the sea level, located in the Swiss Alps. Often it remains closed from the beginning of November until June, and closed daily from 18.00 to 08.00h.
